Is a Root Canal needed?

    Hi,
Got a couple of twinges in an upper back tooth over the last few days, mainly when having a hot or cold drink. I have fillings back there so presumed one had got loose or something similar so went to dentist expecting to get the old filling removed and replaced with a new one.
The dentist xrayed and photographed the tooth and showed me that a corner of the filling had broken off and said that food etc was getting in behind it and also that the tooth level was near the gum and because of both of these a root canal and crown was required. (quoting over €900 for the two jobs in one visit).
I googled when I got home and while this seems common there seems quite a bit saying that if I am getting twinges then the tooth/nerve is still alive and shouldn't be root canaled which kills off the nerves and basically the tooth?
What should I do and should I go to someone (recommendations?) who will try to save the tooth?
Thanks in advance for any answers to my long winded questions.

When the pulp becomes irreversibly inflamed then removal of the insult i.e the decay won't resolve the condition. The nerve may still be alive , however the inflammation is irreversible leaving you with the treatment options of root canal treatment or extraction.

If this is the case a filling isn't going to work.

Teeth are weakened after rct and need protection such as a crowns to prevent fracture etc

Thanks for above, I don't know how bad the inflammation is, he didn't actually use that word and I was in shock :( can you recommend a dentist for a second opinion?

Anyone got a recommendation for a dentist in south Dublin city area or close who is skilled in this area and can save the tooth if it is possible?
