Opened up an electrical hedge trimmer today and the power lead had a coil winding just inside the handle. Basically it was a metal rectangle shape with about 8 windings on each side, neutral on one side, the live on the other.
What is this? Is it some sort of surge protector.

It's to prevent conducted/radiated emmissions from the motor, it will act as a filter / choke.
