There are a couple of ads on DD for 300 M rolls of sheep wire. There seems to be about €100 price difference. The wire in the north is Samson & in Roscommon X Fence sheep wire but not sure what this is. Have any of you any knowledge of these guys or the quality of the wire ?

More than likely it's either Chinese or made in Spain. Have no experience with it, only ever used tornado sheep wire and occasionally tinsley. If you want a good quality fence and wire that is easy to work with and unroll I'd go for tornado. Its more pricey but its the best stuff out there. Trying to unroll cheap wire is a nightmare and it could take the finger off you.

The Roscommon stuff seems the same as is being offered by a company in Leitrim. "Very slight seconds"

I bought some of this stuff about 2 years ago, clearly advertised as seconds.
They were rolls that had suffered a break in some of the wires while being made. So some rolls could have 90 metres in them, and some only 75 metres, etc, etc. sometimes they looked ok, only to have a broken wire or two five yards in.

It was UK made and while it seemed cheaper, if taken by weight it probably was less of a saving than it appeared. Also it was more like 8/80/25 spacing, as the vertical wires were slightly further apart. That in itself was not a problem, as it prevented lambs getting their head stuck in the lower 2 rows.

Only bought it once, as with the drop in the value of Sterling, you can now buy UK made HT 8/80/15 stuff across the border for about 85 euro for 100m rolls.

PS, a 300m roll will need a loader to manouever, or else feck up your back/knees etc.

Thanks for the info. You could be right about the 300 m ... No loader here & back has been well damaged at this stage

Definitely right about the 300m. Even the 100m is ideally a 2 man lift. I think some rolls of wire even come with the gripple joiners and if they don't at say €1 apiece €16 will turn 3 100 metre rolls into 1 300 metre roll with a small bit extra work.
I'm not sure how much cheaper the 300m roll is but even free it's not worth hurting your back.

The tornado wire has the cripples

The 300m rolls are really only used with a quickfencer wire strainer. You can get the Rylock in 500m rolls also. Great job as you haven't to be joining wire which is awkward and seems to take up time.

Bought cheaper Chinese wire a few years ago problems with stronger lambs if they wanted putting head in and just bursting it sliding the gaps wider would go with tornado or English wire since ....nwth on done deal with the wire
