Scam warning - Revenue

Hi all, if this is the wrong forum, please move as appropriate.

Just a quick note to warn people about a scam attempt that I received today.

I received a voicemail advising that I was being subjected to a (first warning bell) time-sensitive legal issue that I should not ignore and contact them back immediately. I must admit curiosity got the better of me so I called back.

The guy was telling me he was from revenue and that I owed them money. I asked him to repeat himself several times , asking for his name and making out I didn't know what he was saying. When I asked him to tell me which revenue office he was calling from he started laughing.. I could hear the call centre environment in the background anyway..

I may be billed for some ludicrous call fee's but it was worth it if this post stops even one person being scammed.

Revenue have posted this on their website.
    http://www.revenue.ie/en/news/articles/warning-bogus-phone-calls.aspx

The call came from 01 5133444

I would think if you owed a government agency money that they would have to contact you by letter. That it would have to be in writing.

Apparently the fraudsters are severely traumatized after overhearing Boyzone playing in the background

Definitely a scam going on I got a small bonus in March and over 50% of it disappeared before I got my hands on it

I got the same call today.

They introduced themselves as some made revenue collection department. They asked who I was and I told them you rang me. This went back and forth until he shouted at me who was on the phone. I hung up then.

I got a cheque off that "Revenue" crowd in the post earlier today. A rebate. I'm just gonna bin it, no point taking any risks.

If you ever get a call from someone claiming to be from a public body such as revenue , always ask them to state your pps number.

And never ever give your bank/card details over the phone.

If anyone is actually stupid enough to think that revenue make settlements in iTunes vouchers then they deserve to loose their money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭Broadman

I hadn't seen the Independent article but was aware of the item on the revenue website. Most people reading this are tech savvy and would not fall for this scheme but if anyone has elderly relatives who might fall for this; no harm in letting them know to ignore this type of approach.

I am sure that the majority of people would not fall for this but generally speaking, contact from revenue generally causes a certain level of anxiety-- which is what they count on of course..

Revenue are a scam anyway, pretty much. "You owe us money, because sh1t we wrote out last year". I'd love to be able to do that - write out new rules and have people going ape to comply. Mafia.

The Revenue don't write the rules.

    The Oireachtas does.

people will then ring the bank and give dogs abuse to the person at other end of the phone cause they give their card details

I just do not understand how people can be so stupid when it comes to things like this- anyone that gives out their card details etc (I'm sorry) but they actually deserve to be stung.

i also got a missed call from number (01) 513 3690 and phoned back and heard a foreign accent say they are the revenue commissioners. They asked if I received letters etc I said no. And they said bye.

Got a text message purporting to be from 123.ie today claiming my house insurance would renew automatically on my card and if I had questions to ring a number, 012418595.

It is not due this time of year though. Seems like a similar scam. How do they scam you by getting you to dial a Dublin number though? Is it a question of the ruse begins when you are talking to them? Or can the 01 number be forwarded to some high charge number?

Just now I received an automated call from 01 442 9808 where it said its a call from Revenue and this is last warning call before they start legal action against me. When I called back a laid back guy sounded like Bangladesh accent wanted to refund some overpaid taxes by updating my debit card details. Don't know if there is any place where we can report this.

Also fair dues for identifying that it was a Bangladeshi accent rather than an Indian accent. Could you perhaps narrow it down to the region, it would help our sleuths?

Yeah i had a missed call and voicemail from that number this morning. Voicemail doesn't even mention revenue, it's something like "Irish Tax Services".
Wouldn't even waste my time calling the number back.

It just takes one fool in a hundred to make this a worthwhile enterprise for them.
And there are plenty of fools who seem willing to part with their money.

Polish couple ahead of me in the bank today cancelling her card because of this. She was supposed to be getting 345 euro of a refund onto her card. Poor English was definitely a factor.
Don't know if anything was taken.

I fail to understand how anybody gets taken in by any of these scams.

Just never give details to anyone over the phone unless you are 100% certain of who they are.

Who would think that revenue would chase money or offer rebates over the phone out of the blue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,185 ✭✭✭RiderOnTheStorm

They are at it again .... Or still at it, whatever way you want to look at it.

Rang me 3 times from 014428389. I answered the 3rd call ( thought it was a work number i didn't recognise). Indian accent, very bad English, very slow to form a sentence.... Hung up after 20 seconds and added number to growing list of blocked number.
