Impossible to top up leap card via app

To be fair I don't know if the problem lies more with the app or with AIB but it's infuriating.

If I try to top up I'll get to the point where I've entered my card details and hit "pay now" or whatever. The app will then go to a loading screen of "contacting issuing bank" & then ask me to enter a 8(!) digit code AIB have sent to my mobile number. AIB in their infinite wisdom have made the message too long for the code to pop up in preview & any attempt to switch focus to the messaging app will cancel the transaction.

Has this happened anyone else? Is there a workaround to make it work in the app?

(I know I can go to a shop or to the website, which is actually down for maintainance right now but I digress, but I'd prefer to get it working in the app because it's a lot more convenient).

well im with BOI and i can top up fine using the app.

So i hope that answers your question on who to blame. the app works.
The solution may be to call AIB and chat with them see if leap card topups can be exempted from verification etc. also use help section on leapcard website and ask if anyone else has this issue.

Their site is down for maintenance until 3 pm, so by the time you read this you may be able to top up

It's a combination of AIB requiring validation and Leap cancelling my transaction every time I switch focus to another app. Plus AIB confirmation messages are absurdly long.
"For your online transaction at National Transport Authority for EURX.00 please use this Verified by Visa one time code;XXXXXXXX within 5 minutes. Thank you."

I just want the code ffs, have it be the first thing in the message!

And actually it works fine with my AIB mastercard. So I guess it's specifically Visa/

FWIW, my BoI Mastercard works fine.

    But.... I can't use the app unless I'm on wi-fi - won't work on 3G/4G

    Samsung A3 (2016) running Android 6.0.1

Have I reported this? No I have not, because a previous bug I reported was accepted, I gave them full details and the various screenshots which they requested but the app was never updated.

It's a one time code since AIB moved away from using that 3D secure webform where you had to enter letters/numbers from your password.

You usually only have to enter the 8 digit code the first time you use the card since they did away with it. I know I did, when booking flights, and I've never had to use one again.

This sounds more like an issue with the Leap app, then AIB.

Apps which "reset" when you multitask away from them are just badly designed. You should really contact the NTA and get them to fix this.

Or buy something on a website using your CC. You'll get another 8-digit One Time Code from AIB, enter it on the site, and then go back to your phone and top up your Leap card. You won't get asked for anything extra.

I remember there was definitely another thread about this before, can't find the link. Really it's something Leap needs to fix, the app shouldn't lose state when you switch to another.

On my Android phone (Google Pixel running pure Android 7) I can swipe down on the notification and see the whole message. Not sure what happens on earlier versions or manufacturers' own version mind you.

    This.
Was topping up last week and the screen locked while I was digging out the card to confirm the expiry date. Had to start from scratch again. It's just a badly designed app.

I can understand a memory purge when processing payments rather than potentially hold CC details indefinitely. Yes, it should be sandboxed away from other procs but this IS android.

Just found another problem with the app.

Found my phone chewing through battery the last week or so, and a couple of times when I've taken it out of my pocket the screen is on and the Leap app is active (I haven't actually used the leap app in a few weeks).

It was only when I was taking stuff out of my pocket last night that I realised what's happening. I've needed to carry my passport around for the last week. Took it out, put it on the desk. Put the phone down on top of it, Leap topup app popped up straight away. It's obviously being triggered by the NFC chip in the passport.

That strikes me as completely ridiculous. I'll want to use the Leap topup app once every month or two, and I'll trigger the NFC read then. If it's registered itself as the default Intent for processing NFC reads in general and gets triggered by any NFC chip that goes near the phone, that's insane.

This is the phone and not the app

If the phone sees a NFC device it will trigger the default application (or offer a choice if multiple apps and no default)

The Leap App can be dead and not running, the NFC system will ask to load

Easy solution is to install another NFC tag reading app, and as mentioned once there are 2 and no default you'll be prompted. Or simply toggle NFC on/off as required via the shortcut in the settings panel that's present on most android phones. It's not as ridiculous as you are suggesting for an app to assume complete responsibility for a function if it is the only installed that is capable of that function, and I'd wager that a lot of users would complain if they had to explicitly open it/select it each time by default, which is the alternative.
