Citywest to Blessington is one option.

N81 all the way to Tullow, then another 15 minutes to Carlow. Just bear in mind that a LOT of quarry trucks use the N81 and overtaking opportunities are few and far between. I'd go the motorway myself, tbh.

If you get as far as Straffan you can go completely cross country to Caragh and then down to the Newbridge exit which is one before you turn off the Naas bypass for Kilcullen. It's a bendy country road though so be careful. I got that way if I'm heading from Maynooth

Another option is the road behind the poitin still that brings you to towards kill/kilteel and in the punchestown direction and into Kilcullen eventually!

Have a look on Google maps I have travelled it in a truck loads of times!

Depending on what end of Carlow you need to be in I would leave the N81 at different locations.
If its the Castledermot Dublin end then I would turn right after Baltinglass L4015 and go that route.
From Baltinglass to Carlow takes 20 minutes

Getting through both Tallaght and Blessington that hour of the day can be fun. I'd stick with the M7/M9 if it were me heading down.
