I'd probably remove the actual spikes from the shoes though and don't point out that they go into the shoes.

Absolutely no need to do this.

There shouldn't be, but it's all very dependant on which side of bed the security person got out of that morning of if they are new to the job or not. On going through security with sharps and actual potentially dangerous things, but that are permanently attached to me... one day they won't even notice and will just wave you through, the next time they get all agitated and start trying to get me to dismantle myself and calling supervisors along and put me through scanners that will potentially cause my devices to break.

The spikes will probably not be noticed on the xray anyway if they are attached to the shoe, but an untrained minion opening your bag for some other reason and seeing a spiked shoe could decide to think it's a weapon. They take nail clippers off you afterall.

Athletes travel around Europe all summer long. Athletes who pay their own way so don't go paying extra for checked luggage (wouldn't put something as important as spikes into checked luggage anyway). Honesty it's fine.

If running spikes are a weapon then so is a belt which can be used to choke somebody. High heels would be a real weapon following this logic too.

Just strap them to your Javelin, be grand...

I'm not questioning that they are fine to take on the plane, I'm just warning that airport security personnel are very, very random in what they do and what they happen to consider "dangerous" or worthy of giving you hassle about and that there are ways of minimising the time it takes you to get through.

Logic does not apply when it comes to getting through airport security.

I've travelled over to the UK with 50 of our athletes and the only issue was that security took my metal grips for taking spikes out :-)
