Fertilizers can make drinking water carcinogenic and block oxygen transportation

The German, and presumably EU limit for nitrates in drinking water is 50mg/l. Excessive nitrates caused mainly by farming – fertilization have to be removed from drinking water to make it safe, and this costs money. While nitrates themselves are safe to humans, they can turn into nitrites which are linked to cancer and block oxygen transport in the blood.

The logical route is to limit the amount of fertilizer being used, which is escaping into the water system. Failing that expensive water treatment is required to bring levels down to acceptable amounts.
