Sounds like he was lucky, maybe just a broken leg

Getting trapped in a car on fire would be a bad way to go

Just a scratch compared to his previous crash.

Awful race line. Lost it on first bend.
Funny way to drive a car.

Think the acceleration must have caught him by surprise, that's stupidly quick.

Looks like it's powered by some giant iPhone batteries, probably explain the fire.

Not a great advertisement for electric cars, would have thought it was petrol car from the burnt out wreck

I guess we know laptop batteries can combust when damaged but have batteries in f1 cars or formula e and it never gets mentioned as a fire risk. Although was a battery fire in one of the garages once

Id have thought the problem is the shorting out of such fully charged powerful batteries, the heat and energy released would be tremendous..
Have you ever seen a car battery shorted with a piece of metal ?

Rimac Automobili can confirm that the Concept_One, tested by the crew of The Grand Tour against two other supercars in Switzerland this week, was involved in an accident. The filming in Switzerland was ongoing from June 5th and involved various tests – including a hill climb race on June 10th.

Following the accident, the driver – Richard Hammond - was assessed at a local hospital. The Grand Tour team assures he has not suffered any severe injuries.

A spokesperson for The Grand Tour said:
"Richard was conscious and talking, and climbed out of the car himself before the vehicle burst into flames. He was flown by Air Ambulance to hospital in St. Gallen to be checked over revealing a fracture to his knee."

"Nobody else was in the car or involved in the accident, and we'd like to thank the paramedics on site for their swift response. The cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated."

Rimac Automobili wishes Richard a quick recovery.

    There is a video of the crash here;

Never give Hammond a one of a kind car, it's like he wants to be the first person to crash them.

Possibly but typically a short in circuit would blow a fuse or just melt away the bit of metal shorting the batteries like a welder. Would think something punctured the batteries or burst them open, producing more of a chemical fire

It's likely a punctured lithium cell. Imagine this times 5000:
