SAAB 9-3 lower cover fell off

This part fell off my saab 9-3 yesterday. It was already damaged and got hit so was hanging off. I removed it completely. Does it serve any purpose other than aerodynamic? Can I leave it off?

Splash guard. Wouldn't worry too much about leaving it off, but you could go farmer jack spec and cable tie it back in place?

Thanks. Was driving it today on the motorway was grand up to around 100km/h then once over I could hear something flapping about under the bonnet from the same area so might need to put it up on a ramp and see whats happening.
