I spotted a hummingbird hawkmoth in my locality (Roscommon) the other day. Up until I noticed it buzzing and darting from flower to flower I didn't even know they existed in Ireland.

Unfortunately, by the time I had my camera out he had scarpered. I looked it up on Google and it was definitely a hummingbird hawkmoth. Is this an unusual sighting or have they become more common here in recent years?

    They're pretty spectacular.

There seems to have been a huge arrival of them in the last two weeks for sure - it's worth recording the sighting on the National Biodiversity Data Centre website here: http://records.biodiversityireland.ie/start-recording
