Painting a fireplace

    Hi all,

I have a fireplace I'd like to paint.

It's an old marble fireplace. The part I want to paint is not the marble itself, but rather the metal fire surround.

That part is currently lilac. I want to paint it black.

I have heat resistant black paint.

My question is do I need to sand the lilac paint before I apply the black paint? There is no rust and the lilac paint is quite shiny and in good condition.

    Any advice appreciated!

    Thanks

    Yes sand it.

If it's had years of paint on it I'd be inclined to take a wire brush to it as well.

    Great- cheers for the reply.

Should all the lilac paint be removered, or just roughened up so the black paint sticks?

    Thanks!!
