Hi, I'm a Russian who's been living in Ireland for nearly 20 years. In Ireland I got my Masters degree and phd in applied mathematics and theoretical physics. However, it seems that I am entirely unemployable. Age 52. I have done many job seeking programs which haven't helped me at all.

I started a thread last year, hoping to start a new masters degree with the aim of increasing employability and even started the NCI Data Analytics course (as suggested by people on this forum) which I found I couldn't complete due to not completing an undergraduate course related to computing.
    See http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057645212

Many people in the previous thread also suggested that I learn Python and Excel as a basis for better employability which I have both put hours into learning since then. I have also learned SPSS and Tableau. It appears that this hasn't helped in finding a job.

I don't understand whether there is any purpose in learning more coding languages/programs because up until now nobody has even checked how well I know these current ones and I don't know if that is something that is actually needed to increase chances of employability.

It was heavily pushed by users on the forum that I should find a careers coach. I approached Jobcare for a coach and I had a couple of meetings with him as well as a long email conversation.

We decided that my 3 main job options are Research in Science, Teaching and Data analyst. Most of the jobs that I've been looking for were in the Data analysis realm. I received feedback from recruitment agencies telling me that I was overqualified for their work. In addition, most jobs ask for prior experience which I do not have (making it impossible to start).

Based on the updated information (learned more languages/programs, approached careers coach, given feedback from agencies) what should my next course of action be? Thank you for any comments.

  • Just wondering have you tried to apply to many companies directly rather than going through the recruitment agencies? There's plenty of companies in various industries who are always looking for people in the data science/analytics realm.

Sorry to hear it's not working out for you, hope you find something soon.

I use 5 websites which search and bring me all advertisements not only from recruitment agencies but also from employers. I tried to directly apply to employers. My CV is made available for all to see (including employers).
