Marrying in Belfast?

    Hi all.

I'm looking for advice from people who have gone up and married in Northern Ireland. Myself and my SO are hoping to go to Belfast to get married in the City Hall.

I know you need two witnesses, but are the requirements there the same as in the Republic? Do they need to be with you at meetings, etc?

We're basically eloping and won't be telling anyone until afterwards, so if I can pull two strangers off the street, or use staff of the City Hall, then all the better.

I'd appreciate any input that anyone has or if anyone's done similar.

    Thanks a mill!

Hi, I'm getting married in Newry in a few weeks, similar situation, just the 2 of us in the registry office & 2 witnesses from the street. May be slightly different in Belfast, but in Newry they said that staff can't act as witnesses but they seemed to think we would find 2 strangers easily enough. In newry, we didn't need an appointment to meet with the registrar & give our notice (not sure if it is the same in Belfast) so we just walked in with our notice to marry forms, ID & birth certs & the registrar gave us a date just over 28 days later. We didn't need the details of our witnesses at that stage. The registrar suggested we ask 2 people on the street on the day, as long as they are over 16.
Pity you aren't doing it in Newry, we could have arranged to act as witnesses for each other!!
