Family member in market for a petrol car and I have seen a 10 Astra j..
The Astra h petrol 1.4 is a chain driven and know for stretching. Along with head gasket trouble.
Is the same engine in the Astra j.. I know the h is 90 bhp while the j is 100 I think

The Astra J weighs roughly the same as the moon. The 1.4 is a dead duck in such a heavy car.

The engine is the same as the old model. There was a 100ps option in the Astra H too.

The newer engine is 1364cc and is turbocharged.

There was a new non turbo 1.4 added but it didn't come till the current Astra K model.

A well maintained and regularly serviced Astra is highly unlikely to cause any problems with a stretched chain or head gasket. Most of the cars that suffer these issues haven't been serviced on time & using the correct oil etc. Always look for one with full Service history that you can call to verify what was done at each service.

Just had the timing chain replaced on a low mileage astra H 1.4 (90 BHP), with a full service history from new from a main dealer.

So it is not just down to bad maintenance.
