From Article:-
She turned on Google maps and Whats App, to arrange for a mattress to be delivered, she then switched them off straightaway," Denise explained to Joe Duffy on air.
When Denise contacted Eir to complain, she was told the charges were valid.
"Her usage was 1.5 gigabits and they charge €10.24 per megabit, and there was no negotiating

1.5 GB is a huge amount of data and was not used just for Google maps and Whats App.
There is a possibility it may have updated apps and operating system while on but this would still require time.
I think it may have been left on a lot longer than been said (Daughter on J1 Visa :o ), but I'm sure Eir could provide that information too.

Despite all this, I do think there needs to be a cut-off limit for this type of situation as background data is not understood by everyone and how it works. This applies to all operators.

Parents fault for putting the kid on billpay. She got a text advising of rates. With LTE its easy to hit 90Mb+ meaning 1.5GB in 133 seconds not counting upload.

Netflixes new offline content feature would easily account for the whole bill. Many load shows on the way to the airport.

Maybe so, but it's scary that it could happen so easily. Wouldn't you think that it should cut itself off automatically once a certain amount is spent?

Hi  finbarrk,

Thanks for getting in touch.

I'm afraid we would be unable to comment on individual accounts or case, without the account holder getting in touch.

Data roaming can expensive outside the EU and we encourage customers to check the data charges prior to arrival.

Thanks,
Anna

The actual cost of 1.5gig of traffic to major provider is in the region of 5 to 8 cents....

So let that inform your opinion on the ethics of Eir.

SME account doesn't have the limits of a personal one. Curious if they're claiming that VAT back.

She must have downloaded the mattress or something.
