Yoghurt Milk for Calves

Right.. rearing a few calves and was trying yoghurt milk out. It went well and the yoghurt milk smelled just like natural yoghurt with a thicker than milk consistency, calves loved it, really loved it..

Day four and it went off, bad whiff off it, had to dump 45litres :(

Anyone any pointers on what went wrong ??

45litre barrel with valve at bottom, was feeding 36litres so maybe 6-8 litres left and 36litres of warm milk added to top it up again.. is this enough left each time to start again for next feed??

Was making fresh milk up in bucket that had transported yoghurt to feeder so I don't think contamination came in that way. I did use the skim mixer on the drill to mix the barrel of yoghurt before feeding, possibly that contaminated it but it would be "clean", hung up not lying on the floor or anything..

Do people mix the yoghurt before feeding ??

Have a gallon of milk made to start again.. Barrel is soaking in steriliser..

Plan this time when I have it up and running is to add a Yakut at every feeding to keep it topped up, 10 yakult is only ?4 so its not much bother..

    We're using milk replacer..

TBH I never had success making yoghurt milk from milk replacer although sam kade would be my go to man for advise.

    What's in the milk powder?

I don't think you can make yoghurt from whey and plant based powder. Afaik.

It's a skim milk based product.

I've never made yoghurt from milk powder either.

Sam Kade seems to have though.
