How is selling to a dealer different?

    Found this online:

If you sell your vehicle to a motor dealer, you have to complete Form RF105 (pdf) which is available from the motor dealer. The completed form should be returned to the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division, while the Vehicle Licensing Certificate and Vehicle Registration Certificates (Vehicle Registration Certificate for post-April 2004 vehicles) are given to the motor dealer.
When selling a vehicle to a motor dealer in either transaction, a valid garage code must be supplied on behalf of the motor dealer. Failure to supply this code will result in the change of ownership being rejected - by either your Motor Tax Office or the Driver and Vehicle Computer Services Division. The motor dealer can only obtain a valid garage code from the Department in Co. Clare by fulfilling strict criteria. (See "Where to apply" for contact information.

How on earth are you supposed to know if the garage code is real?

    Not sure I understand.

Is the garage real? Is there telephone and fax numbers real? Is the money your getting real? Are you getting another car from them? Is that real? Dose it have a real warranty?

Is there a reason why you think the garage would give you an incorrect code? What benefit could that be to them?

I was asking how I, the seller, knows that this garage code is real or not. Could the dealer be making it up? Should I care?

Its the garages problem isnt it, its only for when they go to register the car to themselves so you shouldnt worry about it.

oh ok, but say they can't register it or they don't want to register it, can I be liable for anything or am I in the clear so long as I have the form completed?

Why is he coming to your house?

Have you rang this garage directly to contact him? Are you sure he works there? You can ring garage to confirm all details inc there code from the number on website and verify who will collect.

    How are you being paid?

On Google maps it looks like there is a Peugeot repair garage(westland motors) there with a small door with onlineautos.ie

Of course this could be old data but how long is cobys there?

Have you been to this garage?
    Have they seen your car?

No I have not been there only called them
Not hey have not seen my car

All these questions are good but make me feel a bit uneasy. Am I being too naive here? anyway, I have never sold a car in Ireland so not sure how the process works except for when I purchased my car, the owner and I just mailed the log book and that was that. This being somewhat different got me asking questions.

So a guy is driving to your house, over 100Kms to buy a car that he has never seen?

Unless it's some ultra rare car, I would thread very carefully!

No, it is your problem. Especially when you receive unpaid toll charges letter.

So how this this whole deal initiate? Did you just find there website call them and ask would they like to buy your car?

Or did someone ring you to an ad you have and said they were from the garage?

It might be legit but it does seem strange.

Can you post you ad or car details and the price your selling to this garage/person

that is what I am trying to do by asking the question in the OP. What do you suggest?

let's say for arguments sake that it is all legit and the guy is just coming to buy a car. Since he is a dealer I have to give him the logbook. What do I need to get from him and what do I need to check?

Okay if it is legit only....

    I would

    Look for company id
Look for personnel Id, licence, passport
Check money is not conterfit, buy a pen
Post the log book yourself when filled in
Check they are insured to drive car if they are testing before buying.
Go with them in car and never leave them with keys while your not in car

Read the thread on selling car and follow what is in this too

They will have to send 2 people down to collect car, to drive back in theirs and yours

Again what is the car and how much?
This seems like a lot of trouble to get a car, that I believe you bought second hand already.

Can you suggest dropping the car into them as a possibility and see if there is any hesitation on their part?

I like your idea about suggesting to drop the car.

the thing about the log book: when you sell to a dealer you give them the blank log book, that is why I posted this. The dealer is supposed to give you a form and take the blank log book.

Selling it to a dealer is financially silly. If he'll pay €6k for it you should be able get more for it privately, particularly if it's got a warranty and fsh.

I told you on the other thread €7500 was a price that you'd get calls at. After that your sales skills will determine what exactly it'll sell for.

Thanks, I did take your advice but had no calls for that, this is the highest offer I got so far and we are leaving soon :(

a lady actually just called and said she will come in the morning to see it, she sounded very interested so we will see. but there is a chance she doesn't take it and our flight is coming up

Yes you are right: Silly AND heartbreaking

Very odd a legit business would deal in cash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Not really that odd. Most sellers would want cash, means not coming back the next day with a draft.
