What I need to rent car?

Hey, want to rent a car for the week.
Trying to find out hidden costs and stuff i need from the company but it is confusing.

I am Irish, and have full licence, have my own insured car (its just no reliable to drive around Ireland with family for the week).

So i was wondering .... it says €156.99 to rent the pacific car i want from their website if i choose to pay online in full. That is great .... But if i book and pay for it now and go down in 3 weeks time to collect the car are they going to want more money? Are they going to want me to transfer insurance over? Do i need to buy insurance off them? Or do i "rent" insurance off them? Do i need more bill proof of address or will my licence be enough?

I have gone over terms on their site and looked through other forum threads here but everyone is asking a little different kind of question about renting and getting confusing answers back that help them but not me.

If someone could just say in a simple way what else i need and if i need to pay out more money or have more money in my account it would be a great help.

I called them but the girl started listing off price tags of €1000+ things as options and yada yada haha
    Thanks in advance

Insurance Excess protection. It's cheaper to buy your own. See AIG website for quote. Unless you want to risk losing the excess cost in the event of accidental damage.

They will still put a hold on your credit card for the cost of the excess if you have your own cover. In the event of damage they take this, and you claim it back with AIG.

    Grand thanks.
Checked them out and got a quote of €20.93 per day.

Don't want to annoy too much but..... :P Do i purchase the AIG insurance first and wait and see if im approved for the 7 days i need it for before i actually book the car or is that insurance straight forward and given out pretty easy and instant?

Wow, mine was approx €45 for the year.
I thought for short time it was €3 a day.

€20 a day sounds like what car rental companies charge to make money.
Excess insurance is instant but must be before you rent the car as far as I Know.

Also full to full fuel is a better option. They usually also put a hold on your CC for fuel and when you drop your car back full, they will release this hold in a few days with the excess.

Since you don't seem to have much experience renting a car, be sure to inspect the car thoroughly for scratches and bumps when you're picking it up. Have every blemish noted on the rental documentation or they may attempt to land a great big bill for 'repairs' on you when you return the car. Smaller rental companies are notorious for this and the real crooks will show you a tiny scratch on the windscreen and claim that it needs replacing even though it's been there over several rentals, all of whom will be landed with a bill for the new windscreen.

The smaller the company, the more careful you need to watch out for these 'gotchas'.

Did you just intentionally write "pacific"??
Some people say it, which is bad enough but you just took it to the next level!!

So do you need your own insurance to rent a car? I am 30 and have a full licence but I am not currently insured on another. Just want to rent a car for a day to go to a wedding down the country.

Also do you need a credit card? I dont have one. I have a visa debit that Enterprise seem to accept.

    Sorry about all the questions

Most private car insurance policies will not cover the policyholder to drive hire cars so no makes no difference if you have or haven't your own insurance. I think the car hire companies insist on you taking their minimum insurance cover anyway but you could always take out your own insurance to cover the policy excess on the hire car's insurance as this is usually quite high ~ circa 1,500.

So basically if there is damage done to the hire car then you have to pay the first 1,500 of the repair bill. Take out your own policy excess insurance so that they pay that first 1,500 instead of you from the likes of here: https://www.carhireexcess.ie/. Car rental companies will offer this also but usually it's cheaper to arrange this yourself.

Regarding the credit card, some will take a debit card but make sure there is plenty of money in the account as they normally place a large deposit holder on the card to cover themselves.

Out of curiosity, would claiming against car hire excess insurance affect your NCB on your own car? Could you still legally answer no to the 'any claims in the last 5 years?' question when getting a quote?
