    From RTE News.
Eleven people have been taken to hospital following a "dangerous occurrence" at the Poolbeg Incinerator in Dublin.
The Health and Safety Authority said it was notified of what is known as an "uncontrolled release" at around 6am.
Nine people have since been released from St Vincent's Hospital while two remain under observation.
The HSA said its inspectors are on site.

    :(

Remember that film American pie, well remember the part he finally gets with the hot girl?
Yeah, that's an early release :P

But hopefully all is well at poolbeg and isn't too serious.

    Contrava statement

In a statement, Contrava - which operates the facility - said it was investigating the cause of the incident.

The company believes the release of lime occurred due to a problem with a door seal in the fabric filter baghouse, where emissions of small hazardous particles that form as part of the burning process, are filtered.

Contrava added: “The safety of our employees and contractors is of utmost importance to Covanta and we are investigating the incident thoroughly.”
Their statement in full reads: “Late on Wednesday night a small amount of lime was inadvertently released inside the flue gas treatment area during the commissioning and testing of the Dublin Waste to Energy plant at Ringsend.
“At the time, there were a number of workers in an adjacent area. As a precaution, eleven workers were sent to St Vincent’s Hospital nearby for medical evaluation. Two were detained overnight.

“Combustion Unit No. 1, which was operating at the time, was shut down in an orderly and controlled manner. The lime was contained within the building and did not escape into the environment and the incident had no impact whatsoever outside the plant.
“Both the EPA and the Health and Safety Authority were notified of the incident.
“The safety of our employees and contractors is of utmost importance to Covanta and we are investigating the incident thoroughly.
“We are investigating to understand what exactly occurred, but it appears from preliminary investigation that the release of the lime was due to a problem with a door seal in the fabric filter baghouse.”

9/11 have been released, 2 kept in.

    Great start.

Yeah, not ideal. The reason why you do test runs though. Hopefully none of the workers go seriously harmed.

And they are planning to build 7000 houses beside that toxic incinerator!!! And down the road from a huge effluent treatment plant. And across the road from a power station. And close to a port that works 24/7. Good planning my hole.

You'd swear it was plutonium that was released!

In Austria, incinerators are the norm in cities. The one in Vienna is even a tourist attraction.

Well, the one in Vienna is an attraction because Hundertwasser designed it and he's close to sacred in Austria. They aren't particularly a norm in cities, more in the suburbs but they are around and people don't give a damn.

Flour mills are probably more likely to explode, but no one gets excited about houses being near them.

As usual, the NIMBY argument. I'll create as much waste as I like, but whatever you do, don't let it be treated in my locality.
