I am looking to push myself a little and design a website something to keep me occupied.
What are people using for this Wordpress, or are there other alternatives.
What is the best value for hosting, Blue host or other.
I will be honest I have no knowledge in these matter so any advise would be great.

I've been using Squarespace for a few weeks.
Its not as customisable as wordpress but it's very user friendly seems to have most things you're likely to need.

If this is for your business, I highly recommend WordPress, as you will have more control. I also couldn't recommend Siteground more for hosting. I have been using them for 2 years now to host my friend's website and they are amazing. The support they give is just excellent. I just recently started up as a freelancer and made the mistake of signing up with LetsHost. The website has crashed at least 4 times since it went live and their customer service is not as good. I have a month left on that hosting subscription and then I am going to use siteground for all my websites.

WordPress is really easy to learn, there are so many tutorials on youtube and lots of websites dedicated to it - WPBeginner is one of my favorites. If you want a .ie domain you can just buy that anywhere and it's pretty straight forward to point it to your server. Siteground is very helpful you can open a chat with them and they can tell you anything you need to know. With most hosts as well there's a one click install for Wordpress so all you need then is to pick a good theme to get a website up and running. If you need any help let me know.

As someone who has built websites (html) and from php templates and Wordpress over the past 10 years. Then I have been involved in marketing website businesses and still look after one business website.

If you want some honest advice...............If you want a proper job doing and/or it's a business website........then get someone who is a professional to do the job for you and more importantly look after it for you.

A business website in fact any website is totally useless if your intended market/viewers can't find it or/and it isn't up to spec and compliant now and future with google.

Looking after business websites can be intensive in time and labour.

(If someone thinks I am touting for business your wrong I am website/internetted out of my skull and only look after my mates business website and NO other ever again)

Thanks, This is just a personal project more than anything. A project to challenge myself.
I have started it using Wordpress, I am reasonably pleased with my success so far.
The transfer to a mobile site is something I am struggling with and the current set up is horrible.
I am also struggling with google search its not showing up. Though I believe that can take a few weeks.
With the sun and lovely weather we are having I am out taking shots rather than working on it.

If you purchase the right gallery plug-in you will find it will be set up for mobile.......but saying that how many people view photos from a photographer via a phone?

Have a look at wix.com - bout as simple as you'll get to use and there's some nice designs. If you're not technical you'd put together a grand looking site.

Hey guys. I'm also interested in setting up a photography website and yeah, haven't a clue where to start :o.

So do you purchase a host site first and then create the website on wordpress or wherever? What would the best hosting site be that's not too expensive?

I use Zenfolio and have been for the last 7 years. Have a couple of different sites with them. Integrated print lab for full automation for sales. I print my own so you can also take payments and self fulfil the prints.

Word of warning just cause you have a website don't expect the sales to flow. It is very hit and miss. Most photographers will tell you that online print sales are falling.
Most of our business comes from local prints and at fairs but the website does also get orders. Nothing that you would retire on lol.

We also use if to host private galleries for portrait shots and clients can then share the passord protected folder if they wish. you can set up print option bundles or allow downloading etc.

If interested let me know as there is a code you can use to save 10% if you want it.
Good look with the new site.

Thanks Balfey. It's more of a hobby and side interest rather than making money to be honest. I wouldn't expect to be giving up my full time job.....would be nice though!

The 10% you're talking about is for using zenfolio?

Wailin to be honest mine started originally as a hobby and grew. Zenfolio is also a great back up for jpegs as there is no upload limit.

10% discount is for Zenfolio. Referral Code: CSC-3HS-X4R

Try it free for 30 days and see what you think.
