I worked in the same job for 9 months. I worked really hard as staff was cut from 4 members of staff to 2. I did not have a good working relationship with my one support staff as she did little work and one day even left to go shopping in working hours and usually she only turned up twice a month. I was her supervisor and tutor. I did not want to sign her off as her work was not good and she seldom came in and my boss made me do the work she should have done. My boss insisted I sign her off and said he was paying her for working full time and he pretended she was in work all the time when she wasn't and told me sign her off. I eventually did. I thought there was something funny going on between them.

I was wrecked after work every day as I was doing a lot of extra work. I had to work really hard. I asked my boss could I work part time or I would have to leave as I was so wrecked after work I wasn't feeling well. He said he would think about it but after a week said having someone part time in my role wouldn't suit the business so I ended up leaving. He asked me to stay until he found someone and I said fine and asked would he act as my referee and he said fine. He also asked me to do overtime and asked if I wanted to be described as a cooperative employee implying I should do the overtime. I did so. On my last day I returned the keys and showed him how sales had increased in my tenure and he said he would fill out the referee form I gave him. I had asked him to fill this out earlier but he said he would fill it out at the end of my working time with the company.

I got a shock when a recruiter rang me to say he had told her he would rather not give me a reference.
