Easycap questions?

Hi Team....my old VCR broke down the other day, and I'm looking out for a replacement. In the meantime, I've bought an Easycap USB in the hope that I can play my old videos through my laptop.
    Two quick questions:
    1) Is there alternative software that I can download to run the Easycap? The link supplied by the seller needs Dropbox and Winzip, and they both want me to sign up and give them money.
    2) Does the VCR I buy have to have the white/red/yellow sockets on the back? I have what seems to be an adapter that has these sockets on one side and a scart connection on the other...will this do the same job?
Thanks in advance for any advice, I'm no tekkie so all help appreciated!
PS: The Easycap I bought is on Ebay, full pics and details there if required.

You don't need any specialist software at all to record from such a device.
You can use VLC to display the output and record what is displayed in VLC (VLC Record button of Advanced Controls).

A link to the device you bought would have been helpful instead of suggesting anyone who might help should search for what you are referring to. ;)

    The Scart adapter should work.

Thanks for the reply, gratefuly received. As mentioned, I'm no tekkie, step by step to find VLC (and how to add a link!) would be much appreciated!

Just copy the URL from location bar of browser to your post, when the page you want to reference is displayed, as I have done above.
