I just got a letter in the post from my local GP practice asking if I would be interested in taking part in a clinical trial for healthy volunteers

firstly Im not sure I am all that healthy but I was wondering if anyone had ever done this sort of thing and what it was like, whether they would do it again etc

They are offering compensation of a min ?100 a day

Shall I take the money and assume the position? or is this a dangerous path to be starting?

    What say you AHers?

Well it would all depend, would you have to take experimental drugs etc that could leave you messed up for life.

You should definitely do this immediately and without hesitation - I cannot possibly imagine any sort of downside.

Depends entirely on what the trial was. I'm a scientific researcher and have run trials and been a part of trials as a healthy volunteer but there were minimal risks involved.

If you are hesitant and are saying you aren't sure you are healthy then why would you consider doing something which states is for healthy volunteers?

"Healthy volunteer" is a very loose term in medical research trials. If you don't have a chronic condition nor take any long-term medications, you'd probably deemed as "healthy". They might, however, ask you a bunch of personal and lifestyle questions (age, gender, whether you smoke, drink, maybe BMI), which might let them identify the potential less healthy ones, but those results/outcome would still be useful.

This is very unlikely. I used to work in clinical trials and this sort of thing is nearly unheard of. Regulations have been significantly beefed up after the TGN1412 incident in London not too long ago.

OP, I'm not saying that there is no risk. It is up to you. You have a 50% chance to get the placebo so that's something to consider. It depends on what the candidate drug is being used to treat. You'll get told up front everything about it including possible side effects.

It may not even be a drug trial, the research may involve using your details to profile the use of GP surgery or look into primary car leading to hospitalization, or how visits break down in terms of gender, age, general health status or any number of things, and the results used to maximize the service or for planning purposes.

If it's a drug trial there are significant safeguards these days. And you may not even be in the drug group.

Can you operate heavy machinery when on the medication? Will they supply the heavy machinery?

The men tumbled like dominoes. One man tried to walk to the toilet and collapsed. The wards became chaotic with blood, vomit, and staff and patients shouting. It was clear which two had been given the placebos.
The men all had multiple organ failure.

It's unlikely to.even be a drug trial realistically.

?100 sounds seriously dodgy. They might be using Monopoly money. Insist on getting paid in Euros. Then lie back and take the medicine.

Why is ity they always seem to be looking for males to trial things on? I've never seen an ad looking for female guinea pigs.

You've clearly never seen the film where the hot sexy nurse totters in wearing high heels and a little nurse uniform saying she needs a sample.

A word of warning. I had a placebo addiction. Very hard to cure because every time I tried to stop I'd convince myself that it wouldn't make any difference :P
