Shared Sewer and manhole

Hi I need to move a manhole in my back garden which is part of the shared sewerage system for a block of 6 houses. Dublin City Council told me Irish Water are now responsible for this, on phoning Irish water I was told its a private system as it in my back garden and I can move it if I want, they are only responsible for the one on the man road.

    Is this correct?

A quick google search online suggests that its  a big issue and I need to have engineers etc. and get permission from the relevant bodies but Irish Water seem to be telling me its my business as its in my garden, is this correct?

Get it in writing from each, and then work away I suppose. Only issue is that once there are changes, you'll likely be responsible for any issues for the changed portion.

Can anyone from Irish Water clarify this?

No information on the website yet Ive read online that its illegal to build over or move  a sewerage pipe without planning permission even if it is a private shared drain?

    Thanks for your post.

As Irish Water only has responsibility for the mains sewers on the public road, if you wish to carry out works on the private sewer pipes you will need to apply for planning permission.

For more information on pipe maintenance responsibility please see here.

Please let us know if you have any further queries and we will be happy to help.

    Thanks,
    Siobhan.

    Thanks for the response Siobhan.

Can you clarify where it states I need to apply for planning permission? Do you know that for sure or are you just presuming I do?

I contacted Dublin City Council and they told me Irish Water are responsible for the sewerage, I phoned Irish water and they told me that if it is in my back garden then (as per your map) its not Irish waters responsibility, however you are telling me I have to apply for planning permission. Can you forward a link to a site stating that or clarifying it?

I would presume that as Irish water is the organisation responsible for sewerage in Ireland that they would be easily able to clarify the situation with the drains in peoples gardens which ultimately connect to their system.

    Thanks

    Hi Sharon,

    Thanks for getting in touch.

As Irish Water are only responsible for the mains sewers on the public road, you will need to apply for planning permission to carry out works on the private sewer pipes in your garden. Further information on pipe responsibility can be found here.

We hope this helps and please let us know if you have any further queries.

    Kind regards,
    Louise
