Scania trucks: basic questions on models

    Hi there,
I'm doing a group logistics assignment for my masters which requires analysis of a companies fleet and whether or not to oursource it or manage it inhouse. Before I approach a Scania dealer about pricing, I want to know some basic things to not look totally clueless.

-Whats the difference in the Scania R and S series model? Which is most popular, could I hazard a guess the R model just from what I see on the road?
-Has the R series been replaced fully? I see both old and new models feature on website
-If so which if any is the most common model. 13 or 16 litre engines mean little to me?
-Similarly, is a 12 or 12+2 gearbox more popular
-Which is the most common axle config is it 6x2 or 6x2x4 or 4x2
-One other silly question, where do you buy the trailers? I don't see them on the website

This project is on a large FMCG company so the trucks will be the large 40 foot and probably very basic.

    Thanks

-Whats the difference in the Scania R and S series model?
Cab heigh is the main difference between p (low) and r (high)

Which is most popular, could I hazard a guess the R model just from what I see on the road?
S and T models were just launched late 2016 early 2017

-Has the R series been replaced fully? I see both old and new models feature on website
    Think so

-If so which if any is the most common model. 13 or 16 litre engines mean little to me?
Fairly broad question.... most seem to be opting for the 16 though... depends on requirements though

-Similarly, is a 12 or 12+2 gearbox more popular
Gearbox config is down to individual requirements
E.g is it a tipper on local work, multidrop local, national and motorway work or continental work

-Which is the most common axle config is it 6x2 or 6x2x4 or 4x2
Depends on use, on road 100%? Or will it be offroad on construction sites or farms? Whats the max required payload?

-One other silly question, where do you buy the trailers? I don't see them on the website

Trailers are manufactured by other companies..try

-If so which if any is the most common model. 13 or 16 litre engines mean little to me? For FMCG distribution 13 litre (fleet spec).

-Similarly, is a 12 or 12+2 gearbox more popular. Most if not all trucks on FMCG distribution are automatic. Manual trucks are now probably special order.

-Which is the most common axle config is it 6x2 or 6x2x4 or 4x2
Pobably 4X2. 6x2 for double deck trailers. It all depends on the weight being carried.

-One other silly question, where do you buy the trailers? I don't see them on the website. For FMCG ambient: curtainsiders / box vans, SDC, Dennison, David Laurence, Don Bur. For frozen/chilled, fridges by Schmitz Cargobull. All above are usually 13.6m 3 axle. You may also see 2 axle shorter trailers for urban distribution

This project is on a large FMCG company so the trucks will be the large 40 foot and probably very basic. They will be fleet spec, eg the Stobart trucks which were all Scania.

Are these a typo or codes I'm unfamiliar with? I asked about the R and S series; now there is mentions of S and T models and P and R heights
-Similarly, is a 12 or 12+2 gearbox more popular
Gearbox config is down to individual requirements
E.g is it a tipper on local work, multidrop local, national and motorway work or continental work

What is the difference between these two types of gearbox?
-Which is the most common axle config is it 6x2 or 6x2x4 or 4x2
Depends on use, on road 100%? Or will it be offroad on construction sites or farms? Whats the max required payload?

Its for 100% road transport; what is the difference in how these axles work, I just want to vaguely understand the differences before approaching a dealer

Trailers are manufactured by other companies..try

Would you not base your assignment on Volvo ( FM and FH). This is what DHL use for one of the biggest FMCG distribution fleets in Ireland, having recently replaced Stobart and their Scania fleet.

I hope you take my comment as constructive criticism and not a personal attack as it certainly is not meant to be such, in fact I mean it to aim at your educational institution more than anything.

If you're doing a masters then am I correct you have some prior educational and/or work experience in this field? My judging of your post indicates a very limited knowledge as your questions seem very basic.
To do an analysis of a fleet you certainly will need much more information than what trucks and trailers are in the fleet.
Why are you so focused on going to a Scania dealer? There are many more truck makes out there.
"-If so which if any is the most common model. 13 or 16 litre engines mean little to me?"
This what I mean by needing more knowledge experience of the transport industry, if the engine types/power mean little to you then you could end up recommending a 750 hp truck to carry a load of feathers about the place. Similarly with the gearboxes and the trailer questions.
" I don't see them on the website"
What website are you looking at?
"...so the trucks will be the large 40 foot and probably very basic."
Why 40 foot? Could be rigids or artics with urban distribution trailers. BTW very few 40 foot trailers made these days as they don't suit many cargoes.

It takes a lot of experience gathered over years to spec trucks for different types of work, in fact many of the people doing this work will have driven trucks at some stage before doing it.

Would I be fairly accurate assuming a trailer unladen weight of 6.5t and unladen tractor unit weight of 9.5t; meaning a 4x2 axle truck with max weight laden of 26t can legally carry 10t? Trying to work out how much a 4x2 and 6x2 tractor unit/trailer combination can legally carry? I know each tractor unit and trailer will vary but roughly. The trailer will be a refrigerated and not curtain side. Thanks
