Online Passport Renewal

I was trying to renew my passport online. Half way thorough it, it said passport book number must begin with P or L followed by 7 numbers

Mine begins with R and is followed by only 6 numbers.

Does this mean I can't renew it online or is there another way? I don't understand that.

So time consuming to do it by post.

Would calling them directly not yield you a quicker response?

You must renew either at the Passport office or passport express. Doing it by post is as quick as online. They still have to post it out to you ya know? You can't just print it out on the auld ink jet.

I renewed on line, as did a friend, we both got our passports delivered within a week of submitting the application. By post it is a lot longer than that.

Sorry OP, I can't help you with your query, mine began with a P. How long ago did your passport run out?

That's great but the OP must renew using the old method as he doesn't have a biometric passport as it doesn't start with a P or L.

OK, but your post was that online renewing isn't any quicker than by post, not specifying that the OP didn't have that option anyway.

Afraid so, you will need to use the paper route

What you need to know to apply online:

You must be aged 18 or over
Your name must be the same as your previous passport
    Renewing your Passport Book:

You must have previously held an Irish Passport which has expired less than 5 years ago
Your Passport Book must have less than 12 months validity remaining on it. This does not apply for applications due to lost, stolen or damaged passports books.
Your Passport Book number must begin with either the letter ‘P’ or ‘L’

    No, it's not.

You can submit online photos, rather than have to go to a photo booth/pharmacy/print them on the auld ink jet.

You then have to actually go to the post office during business hours.

Passport express takes approximately 15 days and reports are that online allocations are being received within a week.

Now unfortunately the OP can't use the online process but it's totally incorrect to say doing it via post is as quick.
