    Hi All,

I'm new to the civil service and I feel lost.

I am there nearly 7 months and have yet to meet with my manager for review. I have no job description and have been given little to do.

I'm afraid that I'll fail my probation because for all I know I could be doing the job incorrectly.

Has anyone ever heard of people failing probation in the CS?

Have you asked to meet with your manager? Have you not had a three or six-month review yet?

Look to speak with your immediate line manager to have a conversation about clarifying your role/responsibilities and to have a general conversation about how you're doing. Prepare for this meeting, have questions readybthat you want answered and when you come out of the meeting write down the main points from it.

It could be argued that as you have not been hearing from your boss/line manager you are actually doing your job well enough.

You should have had both a 3 month and 6 month review where your role and progress in it are discussed. That these have not taken place suggests your line managers are happy enough with you as they are not following correct procedures in tacking underperformance.

Consider contacting your Employee Assistance Officer for some confidential guidance on this issue - www.cseas.per.gov.ie

To answer your question, yes people do 'fail' probation in the CS.
