M1 hold up today

Heading up the M1 this morning about 11:30am, we spotted a jack-knifed lorry on the south bound carriageway by the toll plaza.

Guards in situ directing traffic into a single lane, the tailback was pretty bad - a mile or two.

Heading backs to Dublin about 5pm we hit the tailback a few miles outside Drogheda.

Reading reports online they say the accident happened this morning at 8:30am. The poor lorry driver died and crashed into a Garda Observation point (whatever that is!).

Sympathies to the driver and his family but why does it take a whole day to clear an accident? Did they initially think there might be a terrorist link?

Could be dependent on what was required to investigate and/or cleanup any particulars of the event. As a death was involved might need some forensics to review. And we don't have a high number of them.

All accidents involving a death or possible death gets full forensic examination.

Usually means road is closed for 3-6 hours.

    Fairly standard international practice.

Gardaí observation point is just the little ramp marked for Garda vechicles only (for speed cams etc) so no need for linking to possible terrorism.

Single vechicle crash in which somebody died would result in a very extensive investigation to figure out if it was a case of lapse of concentration or if the driver had a heart attack before hand
