My friend and I want to do a week long cycling trip of connemara. The plan is to cycle from Galway City to connemara and then do a bit of exploring. Does anyone know if you're able to bring bikes onto the train? They wouldn't be fold up bikes and they would have bags strapped to them.

Yes, allowed on intercity. According to the site you have to book in advance (not sure how enforced that is)

    Prebooking is key.
I tried going to Westport with mine for a weekend and the stupid website wouldn't let me book it on, I went to Heuston station to get a real persons response as the website was just a minefield of confusion. Basically the chick in the ticket booth said "it's a work in progress, next 6 - 8 months" (...years..). Basically because someone had booked the seat beside the bike booth on the same train I wanted to go on the bike booth wasn't available.
To be honest it's an absolute disgrace still and such a hindrance to our tourism that the greenway brigade and IR management have bizzarely in common.
On the bus it's at driver disgression usually, some companies will charge a fare too but small like E5? And if the bus isn't too busy etc.

Taken my bike hundreds of times on that route. Never booked it on in advance. Never any problem.

Was this experience on the old or new site?

Just checked the site to see if it's different, so probably the last version since it now says my "browser is out of date" and is a hellofalot more orange than I remember lol, it was in March/April time.
