Driving test without owning a car

    Hi Guys,

Would really appreciate some help here...
I hold a learner permit driving licence in Ireland, but do not currently own a car. I tried buying a car but most insurance companies wouldn't give me an insurance (less than Euro 6000) since I'm a new driver in Ireland. However, the insurance companies suggested I should wait for 6 months, get a full licence, and then they'll be happy to insure me (for about Euro 2000).

So I waited for 6 months and now booked my driving test to get the full licence. I will be taking my 12 EDT lessons before arriving for the test. However, the fact remains that I do not own a car!

How can I take a driving test without owning a car?

Your instructor can provide the car..

Most EDT instructors will let you use their car for your driving test, think they'll charge the price of a lesson for it. That's what mine did. Just ask the instructor about it when you're taking your lessons, it shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you, that sounds reassuring. I'll speak with my instructor about this.

I can confirm - it's fairly standard practice for driving schools/instructors to provide a vehicle for a test for a fee.

I was passing my truck test, and driving school provided a truck, as I didn't have my own one.

A lot of people pass their test without owning a car, I only ever drove the instructors car for lessons and the test.
Your instructor would drop you to the test center and wait till you finished the test.

Only went shopping for a car once i passed.

It avoids all the hassle of getting insurance on a learner permit and not always been insured for test drives etc without a full licence.

Find a new instructor. Or stop using their tesla for tests.

    Hi,

Need some expert guidance here too.

I understand a driver under the learner live see cannot rent a car for a driving test.

My situation is I hold a full foreign license which allows me to rent cars in Ireland (done many times already). However I couldn't convert my foreign license to an Irish one, but I could apply for a reduced EDT.

Question is: can I rent the car using my foreign license to use on the driving test?? That would help me practicing few good times prior to the test without having to book an instructor's car.

I honestly cannot see why not since there's no problem about the insurance in this case.

I would be very thankful if someone can confirm that. I've tried to reach the driving centre several times without success 😭.

    Hi,

    From RSA PDF

    • Vehicles used as taxis or hackneys are not permitted to be used as driving test vehicles unless the appropriate rate of Vehicle Excise Duty has been paid
    i.e. Class Private.
Vehicles hired under a hire agreement are not generally insured for a driving test. If you plan to use such a vehicle, you must get a note from the hire company indicating that it is insured for the driving test. This must be given to the drivertester on the day of the test.
