Handling facilities

I wonder would this thread be a good idea to share ideas/tips/experience of handling facilities to make life a bit more easy?
I hope to put in some kind of handling facility in the near future. I'm thinking about the combi clamp, and the only reason I haven't bought it yet is indecisiveness. Without proper pens and race it would be wasted. I just happened to come across this picture the other day-seems a class set up and wouldn't rob the bank either. Some handling units are wicked expensive but I suppose if they work they would be cheap in the long run.

One thing I'd like to try is a v-convayer. Saw a few videos and it looks like a right job, holds the lambs steady and can raise them up so you're not bending over the whole time

You'd be better to buy an ordinary race and a pile of gates for the money that the combi clamp would cost.....also very easy to make brackets to pin sheep gates to existing walls etc.
There's a lotn of mixed reports about thecombi so don't buy it unless you use it somewhere first, a conveyor seems to be a better job

That is some set up. You'd need a fair few sheep to justify that. What article is your picture from. Did it have much on the set up?

That is the only reason I was going for the combi clamp too-the sheep are at your height and no bending down

What price would a conveyor be though? Ya as I said the only reason I haven't bought the combi clamp yet is I want to have the pens and race right first as they are the vital parts

It's from a farmers journal article I came across when reading something else. The article itself didn't say a thing about that that particular setup, unfortunately. Pity it didn't give a detail drawing with dimensions. As regards needing a lot of sheep, 750e would go along way in that I'd imagine?

Don't know, they look the job though.....they have one in teagasc in athenry

Shir if they were able to spend €1 million quid on a shed, a few grand on a clamp would hardly be noticed.

It'd be some yoke to have available for hire in a sheep area, we have two bunches here with 350 -400 lambs each, ya get fair pissed off with them when you're dosing and bolusing them together the one day in a race.
If they got used to it they'd be fighting to get into it, ICM has one and they fly into it

I really like the idea of that yard. If it had a double wide race that led into two separate foot baths it would be a great job for dosing/ vacinating while the previous batch footbathed and then switch to other race. There would be a constant fresh batch to work at. Also, a slip ramped dip out to the side of the narrow race would be great. You would be getting in the sheep just for the pleasure of working with them
