Bubbling Bobbin

Hey All, hoping for some advice. I have googled but it's confusing.

I have a brother sewing machine.

The bobbin seems to move around in the holder.

The result is for example turning up a shirt hem, on the inside the thread is perfect but on the outside the thread is all bubbly, like bunched.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks :)

The thread is not properly threaded through the tension knob. The top thread is not being controlled properly. You may need a new needle but most likely it is something in the tension set up. First thing is to just rethread it, then check the tension settings.

    Thanks a million for replying.

Ok I've got a wheel thing 1-5 I presume is the tension. It's currently set on 2.

Side note:Are all bobbins same size? Would it affect it that the bobbins I'm using come from a lidl set?

I doubt it is the bobbin. The underneath thread is forming properly, you said. That is the thread that comes from the bobbin. The thread from the spool is feeding way too easily and although it is being caught correctly underneath, the loop of thread is left on top.

Are you sure that when you put the thread round the tension adjuster it went between two of the 'plates' and not to the back or front? When you look down into the tension adjuster you should be able to see the construction at the front, then usually 3 disks, the thread has to go between two of them. If it slips into the gap at the back or front it will not be tensioned.

If you still have it, there should be a 'troubleshooting guide' in the owner's manual for your sewing machine, otherwise you could look for a copy to download on the internet - it would tell you specifically what to do to change the tension of the thread, as well as anything else that might be wrong with the settings of your machine on the basis of what fabric you're working on.

Thanks very much, I'm gonna sit down tonight and have a go.

I should do a short course or something. It's great to have but I know nothing :)

I agree with above, probably the tension, the needle or even the top tension guide.

If a of this had been checked and it's a side load bobbin (as in a metal bobbin case that you put in the machine) then tighten the screw on the bobbin case a tiny bit, like a quarter turn.

Look up the model on YouTube and check if it should be using a plastic or metal bobbin. Just in case.

The tension could be the problem but the bobbin could be the problem as well. If you have a Brother machine, you should be using the correct bobbins for it - check your manual for more details. The Lidl ones might not be fitting it properly at all . I have two Pfaff machines, and the bobbins can't be swapped between them at all (which means two separate sets of bobbins).
