Any advice on photo editors like GIMP and PAINT.NET? They've been included in a search for good free photo editing software. I need to scan negatives and invert to positive images.

GIMP is pretty powerful, my only gripe with it is the interface is not the most intuitive.

If all you need is inverting scanned images, MS Paint can do it, right-click on a selected part of the image,(or all of it with ctrl-A), invert color is at the bottom of the menu

I'll give it a go with Paint.
