Half marathon training

    Hi folks.

Just wondering if anybody could give some solid advice on training for half marathon. have done 2 before and best was 87 2 months ago.

what would you recommend roughly 12 weeks out. mileage previously was 25 to 30 per week. mostly 3 days running.

don't want to get too technical or bogged down just solid workouts that will help get my time down as much as possible. if anybody could outline a typical week and what I should aim for.

are marathon pace runs worthwhile or is it a bit of a no man's land pace. I've seen it recommended on sum plans.

    many thanks

Some impressive times off limited training. A good book if you wanted some understanding of different sessions, would be faster road running. No harm in doing 8x2 at HM pace with half mile jog recoveries in between, a few times over the course of your training and generally adding more miles and days running will improve your times. Think you would do better getting on HM plan from one of the books on HM training, which really help fill in the blanks. And of course keep doing what your doing at moment as it seems to be working. What is your 5k /10k pb at moment.

have only really done a handful of 5ks over last couple of years. mostly parkruns. best was about a 10 months ago and it was 18.11 in a road race. last 5k I did was around October and it was just under 18.30. have not ran any 10k races.

have done a handful of 10 miles races over the years and two half marathons. then a handful of 5ks here and there.

training would not be very consistent. go through a few months that I'll run 3 or 4 times a week and then maybe 1 or two runs a week at busier times of the year. mostly just to keep fit but would like to see if I can improve.

when you say 8 x 2. I assume you mean 2k repeats? hill training any benefit 2 or 3 months before race?

8x 2 miles at planned half Marathon pace, as part of 12 mile run warm up with a couple of miles then do 2 miles at HM pace, jog for half mile recovery the repeat the same again 3 more times then do couple miles cool down, should give you a feel for the pace, could do this as part of mid week run, not a 100% sure but if you look at DCM website there maybe Half Marathon plan, I know I ran Limerick earlier year and there was a plan for half Marathon on there.

Your 5k time suggests there is improvements to be made, and if you train more judging by what you achieved off what looks like very limited training, you could potentially do much better. If you where interested see if there is a local running club near you and if it fits you would get plenty of advice. But in mean time plenty of good books and plans that you could try out.

Depends on what time your aiming for. I am using the Hanson advance plan for Longford this year.
