Relocating back to Dublin after a few years abroad and need to buy a car. Really like the look of the Jeep Wrangler as well as Cherokee. Thinking of buying second hand they seem practical for driving in the City going camping etc etc. I am wondering does anyone have any input/experience in running a Jeep? They seem to take a good bit of diesel...what about insurance and tax? Are they noisy on the motorway (even with hard tops?)...Thanks for any information, much appreciated!

I'd a friend who spent a lot of time on the road and he said that there was always a Jeep broken down, this was a good few years ago so don't know if they improved with Fiat ownership.

A 4x4 is not a city car. Tax will be high and insurance depends on the phase of the moon when you call. There's very few places to drive off road in Ireland so if camping you'll need to leave it at the trail head and there are major security/vandalism issues with this.

Edit... Missed that you are returning from being away for years. Insurance will be huge unless you kept up an Irish policy.

I cannot imagine how a Wrangler/Cherokee or any other SUV of that type would be practical for driving around a city. Jeep don't sell in large numbers here either so your choice will be limited.

My brother drives an 07 Grand Cherokee which he bought when the Freelander gave out. Merc Diesel engine with fairly low power, low efficiency and limited repair, replacement options. He ignored my views. Fundamentally, I think my 05 V8 Range Rover has been less costly even with a gearbox rebuild! I.e. Cherokee can have all the costs with fewer smiles. If you're going for something out of the mainstream, make sure it compensates in some area.

If you insist on an SUV in the city then look at what is popular - Santa Fe, Rav4, Discovery etc

Low power for a 3.0 diesel?
Or compared to your V8. The OM642 is a very decent engine. Likes diesel in a 4WD jeep no doubt.

What do you mean by limited repair, replacement options?

Had one in uk and also had one here. (grand cherokee) Loved them, never gave trouble and I did big mileage.

Was heavy on fuel though - about 30mpg. Insurance fine.

Its one of those cars that has a select following and probably not worth buying new due to depreciation.
