I've seen lots of court cases lately in the media where I wonder with the level of information supplied to the jury do they have the option to require additional information to verify data as being authentic or more of less 99.9% in normal conditions accurate. For example if it's reported that x in the case sent y a text message/phonecall on a certain day would the jury be mandatorily presented with mobile phone mast data to more or less confirm where the phones were at time of communication or would the jury be expected to blindly assume they were with the parties who owned the phones on the dates/times in question. Basically what I am asking is can a jury ask questions in relation to the confirmed reliablility status of the data presented or must they simply observe the case possible holes and all presented to the court by both parties?

You will be told exactly the right amount of information by each side. Where a chain of events is part of the evidence, the defence will challenge it. If they aren't challenging it, there is usually a reason.

Imagine how things like this get out of hand: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057747249 - all completely baseless.

Text data will usually be presented by a Garda who will give evidence that he got the data from a phone or the network.

If the defence is making some issue about location it is open to them to get mast location information if available, it is also open to Garda to get that same information if they believe it will be important, say if in interview the accused says he was in Kerry and had his phone there when certain things happen.

It is not open to the jury to look for or get any more evidence than was presented.
