    is it some kind of dragonfly? (big image, but its a beauty!)

    looks like it all right.
    Stunning flashes of electric blue/green as it flew.

    Has it a more common name than Demoiselle ?
    Is it a dragon fly or a damsel fly?

    Beautiful all right. I'm not too sure, I just happened on the thread and had a quick google and found it.

    Looks like a damselfly (based on my brief research) but whether or not there's a more common name than what's listed on that site I don't know. I hadn't even heard of damselflies before !

    Maybe someone more knowledgeable might be able offer more info.

    stone flies , caddis flies and mayflies are a bit duller (I think!)
    havent a clue of them though.
    This was the most beautiful flash of colour I've seen in Ireland other than a kingfisher.

    Beautiful Demoiselle is it's common name. A damselfly. It, along with Banded Demoiselle are river species

    Beautiful Damoiselle... one of our larger damselfly species... and aptly named. The males are just stunning in their iridescent green livery :-).
