Ceremony Song Length

    Hi

We are having a humanist ceremony, and we have been asked to pick songs for the ceremony.

We have started to narrow down our selection, but just looking for people's opinions on the length of the songs. We are going with a CD rather then a live singer
We think that if the song is too long that people will lose interest or it will just feel awkward. To balance this we are thinking of editing the songs so they fade in and out..

what are people's opinion of songs at ceremonies?

Honestly, I think that's why a live singer is worth the money ;). We had a humanist ceremony with a singer. I think we managed to squeeze in 4 songs? One to walk in to, one out of the venue, one during the unity candle bit and one during the signing of the register. But the unity candle bit only took a short time, and our singer was able to advise as to how to best time it. Same with the register. I think we finished quicker than expected, and she very subtly and perceptively responded to that by shortening the song she was playing.

With a CD, you have a fixed length and it's really hard to predict in advance how long each portion will take. You'll also need someone in charge of it. What if walking up the aisle takes way longer than expected and the song ends? It's a lot of stress, to me.

Do you need songs? We didn't have any, also had a humanist ceremony. A relative played the harp for walking up the aisle, during the vows and at the end as we left. I would have found some money for a live musician otherwise.

We're having a humanist ceremony aswell. My brother is playing one of my favourite songs on acoustic guitar as I walk up the aisle. My best friend is singing as we sign the register and we're walking out to a track which will be played from an ipod or similar as no one can sing Dusty Springfield like Dusty herself!! :D

we'd prefer songs, that's why we were thinking of shortening our songs choices , as in length of the song, fade in/out. We like the idea of the songs representing a part of us and to break it up a little .

Aside from cost of singer/musician , they won't be able to pull off our song choices as they are too varied.

    Appreciate everyone's feedback

The shorter the ceremony the better IMO. Nothing worse than having to sit in a church for more than an hour especially if it's a summer wedding and it's hot.

Hope you have a fabulous day!

This interests me aswell. Hoping to avoid getting a singer and use ipod for 3/4 songs. When is your wedding? Would be interested to hear how you go.

We had a HSE ceremony last year and had four songs that we edited down ourselves to suit the ceremony. Worked out great for us. Just make sure who ever is in charge of the music knows exactly when to press play! ;)
