Just wondering if anyone has any experience of driving the 1.6 version of the new superb. It seems to me like it might be a bit under powered for the size of car. The 2 litre model is a good deal more expensive and I'd like to have an idea if I really need it, I do around 40k a year. Thanks

What are driving at the moment?

The 1.6 isn't as bad as it sounds in the Superb 120ps version is noticeably better than the old 105ps version.

Test drove the 1.6 combi version and it was very underpowered. Just wouldn't consider it. Been meaning to test drive the 2l version.

The new 1.6 will feel faster than your 1.9 but ultimately the 2.0 sell at a premium as most buyers for a car that size want good performance

In fairness I'm quite happy with the power I have and if this was the case i would probably settle for the 1.6, I guess I need to test drive but I'm concerned one or two drives wouldn't give me a true picture, thanks

If you are in a 1.9 it's very similar.

The old 105ps was missing the low down torque of the 1.9 but that has been greatly improved by upping the power to 120ps.

The test I use is whether it will pull in 3rd gear after going over a speed hump. The 1.9 had no issues but you'd have to change down to 2nd on the 1.6 105ps versions. 120ps models pull away with no issues.

Mondeo 1.5 might be worth considering as that's better than the VAG 1.6 for low down torque, actually feels more like a 2.0 than a smaller engine.

i've 300,000km done on a 1.6 superb combi .. it's no rocket ship but more than adequate. I've had it fully loaded with passengers and baggage for trips to the south of france and it has coped fine.

I've been measuring the fuel economy with the fuely app for the last 100,000km and it has recorded an average of 58.9mpg.

While the power is adaquate; there are days i'd prefer the 2.0L .. but overall its a utility vehicle and serves a purpose - main one being a comfortable place to be for hours on end !!
