Special Stop Orders

Back in the day when DM was still well connected it was possible to get a 'stop order' added to virtually any scheduled train - provided you knew the right people.

I'm looking to get the 13.41 Up train from Enniscorthy to stop for me at Kilcoole. I can return on a service train so that's not a problem.

I wonder who you need to talk to these days or has the practice gone the way of the Dodo? Anybody?

You will unlikely get it, the station manager of the departure station must issue stop orders to the driver outside of scheduled services. They are generally only issued for special events, staffing purposes.

With Rosslare un staffed the manager will most likely be Wexford based however it could be Waterford considering it's their drivers which operate the Rosslare scheduled services and Connolly from Wexford/Gory.

How do Waterford drivers operate the Rosslare scheduled services?

Taxi from Waterford presumably as was the case with the South Wexford line which was operated to suit staff rosters rather than passengers.

TBH I would be surprised if taxi's are used that often, know some staff which live in South Wexford area so it's more less the same time to Waterford/Rosslare.

One time when I was a pup, meself and some mates were drinking cans along the royal canal near MoyValley, Co.Meath. The Sligo line runs right alongside the canal. At about 01:00am, a 141 loco came along and stopped dead about 50 yards from where we were drinking. We could hear voices, and then about 5 mins later, he took off again, headed for Dublin. I'd love to know what that was all about.

The Drivers on this line are Rosslare and Connolly based. Not Waterford.

    When did this change?

Rosslare based but considered part from Waterford depot.

There is some swapping with Waterford drivers operating but expect it's based if the regular drivers who work the services are un available.

    Perhaps I wasn't clear enough.

The SWL was worked by both Rosslare and Waterford based drivers, at one stage Rosslare drivers worked right through to Limerick Junction, but only went to a crossing point in the latter years (Carrick IIRC).

Waterford drivers worked the last train back to Rosslare and returned to Waterford via Bus Éireann bus, not taxi.

Drivers in Rosslare have always been "Waterford based", Rosslare is a sub-depot of Waterford and comes under the Waterford district.

Rosslare has it's own pool of 5 drivers and a further 10 Waterford based drivers sign for the line to act as cover for leave/sickness/specials etc.

They do not get taxis to/from Waterford but would be drivers who live closest to the depot and work direct from Rosslare when required.

No, the Rosslare drivers are "Rosslare" based.
Yes it is part of the Waterford district but they are based/appointed in Rosslare.

I take your point re Waterford drivers covering sickness/leave etc, however, at the moment they haven't enough drivers to cover their own leave(watch out for all the cancelled services on the Waterford/Junction line over the next few months) so would rarely be on the Rosslare line.

I'm sure not, it was much worse for a period last summer, so guessing it will just be a repeat again.

The media reported the high cost of taxis for drivers as being one of the nails in the line's coffin.
