Hi guys. Im bad with taxes so could you please help me. Im working since the end of November, get weekly payments and all ive been paying was the USC , once they took PAYE (?) and now i got PRSI taken off me. Its a good bit more than the USC and I just wonder why and what kind of tax is it, like how does it work. Ive no idea about any of this so please help and thank you. Can I get it back somehow ?

PRSI isn't tax. It's a social insurance contribution. It goes towards funding your state pension, jobseekers benefit etc. This will explain it to you.

I've uploaded an Excel spreadsheet (available at taxcalc.eu/monthlyss or by clicking my signature below) which might be helpful for this query.

In general, PRSI isn't refunded unless the wrong amount has been deducted (could happen if you were put on the wrong PRSI class or sub-class by your employer, for example)
