I got a call from an unknown number and it's making me sick with nerves now. Any idea

Got a call from someone claiming to be from GH Recruitment (I think, he spoke very quickly and this is what I think he said, I'm not 100% of his own name).

Anyway, he called and asked am I still looking for a job. I said yes, as I always am, there could always be something better. He then asked me to confirm where I am working. I said Louth. He said he meant what role. So I told him. He wanted to know if I received the application form. I said no, did he send it by email or post. He said post and could I confirm the address. I did. Then he said it was what he had.

Maybe he sent it to my parents address, so I said in Dublin? He said yeah, what is their address? So I said the first line of address. He said he had both addresses correct. Then started on about some admin position for a 4 month contract. I said I wanted a permanent role and he seemed confused between permanent and full-time, so I explained.

He said he was sorry but had nothing like that at the moment and would get back to me. Can anyone tell me what happened? I had a really bad feeling after I hung up as I realised, other than my name and phone number, he didn't give me any of my personal details, he only asked.

I wonder is it the boss trying to catch me out or something. I am sick as a dog with nerves right now.

I have googled GH Recruitment and have come up with nothing. Since he called from an unknown number I have no way of tracing it and have tried calling my network provider, but they can't help.

Edit: I just found the job listing for the position described. The time frame of contract confirmed it as it is a very oddly specific one of 4 months.

So.. What are you nervous about here? Why would your boss randomly ring you pretending to be a recruiter?

Don't worry. If it's your boss then they are obviously concerned about losing you. There is no law that says you can't keep an eye out for better jobs - might well work in your favour.

I'd be nervous about giving out specific personal information and details, if nothing else.

I am out of work at the moment, and I am not sure. The boss isn't the greatest and I genuinely wouldn't put it passed her. I haven't decided yet if I want to go back or completely leave.

This is exactly it. Yes I know it was very damn stupid. But at the time, it was a quick phone call and I have been applying for jobs in the potential area just to see what is available.

It was only after the call that it seemed so odd.

Without meaning to alarm you, but you gave a complete stranger your home address and your parents home address.
He knows you are out working during the day as you told him that you are currently working....

Maybe you just got the agency name wrong and maybe it was genuine....

So you spoke to a random stranger on the phone and gave them your address and your parents address without actually knowing who it was.
I would be worried not that it's your boss but why did they need this information or why you gave it out so willingly.
Sounds like it could be an I.d scam or something

'unknown number' - do you mean an unfamiliar number, or like a private number?

Absolutely 100%. However, I am not working right now, I am out of work sick, not that it makes it any better. I know giving it out is wrong, but these bits of information seem inconsequential when applying for jobs, they are given out all the time, which is why it didn't occur to me til after the call it seemed wrong.

I could have gotten the agency name wrong, he did speak very quickly and I am almost certain I spoke to him last year some time about another position.

I meant private number. It just shows on my phone as 'unknown'.

Yes I did. And I know it is stupid. Again, when applying for jobs, it's not abnormal to be confirming information, and it wasn't until afterward that I realised he didn't give me much information other than my name.

And some job. a 4 week contract in admin. When I said I wasn't interested in the 4 month contact, I'd hope for something longer he apologized and said he would get back to me if something else came up.

Yes I know it was damn stupid and I am kicking myself.

Would there be any reason a recruiter is asking about your parents' home address? If it is written on your CV somewhere, this makes sense that he would ask you about it. Otherwise...

I would have a different address up until about 4 months ago, which, unless he got an updated CV he wouldn't know. That could be exactly it. If it was the gent from last year, he would have had a CV with my parent's address! I genuinely didn't put that together in the panic.

Then it is probably fine. Just don't be giving out personal information willy-nilly in future ;)

I don't think you realise how much you have made me feel better. Still a little worried, but thank you. :D

If it's someone you think you spoke to previously about another position, can you not call that agency and inquire if you remember who they were?

I think I did, from the manner and speed of his speech. It was 12+ months since I spoke to that person (only reason I remember is most of the recruitment agencies seem to have women recruiting for my kind of position) and I remember the job was something like admin in the building trade but I can't find that email from applying for the life of me. I have torn my inbox apart.

If you check, its an english company for emergency medical personnel. Which I am not. I might have just misheard the man.

Thank god it doesn't seem to be dodgy but be careful OP about looking for a job whilst out sick, that could get you in trouble if your employer was to set up something.

100% and it is a very long story as to why, but I was looking for positions in the new location before going out sick as I would like to be there as soon as possible.
