How to counteract the sweeper in hurling?

How would one go about addressing it without unbalancing the team... Would it be crazy to go man on.man for a period? Positioning of the forwards. Balls in?

Are you sure the thread is for hurling? Waterford may be the only top team to persist with it this year. Wait another year and it will be gone forever.

In order to generate debate, describe what your interpretation of a sweeper system is.

A man sitting behind the half back line in front of the full line mopping up ball.

A man in between the two defensive line has been about for years, most teams ply it through out a game not to concede goals

Its only dropping a player back to defend.

Go around or over him, but you need good delivery and spot on forwards on the move.

Like Tipp against Waterford, or else have a fella mark the lose defender, like Kilkenny against Waterford.

If you had an organised team with good ball control, for me its about playing a short ball to loose men around the middle, one of whom should be the loose man and look to get long range scores or good deliveries right into the opposition 21.
Coaching the full & half backs not to look to delivery long clearances are key as these are exactly the type of ball the sweeper is designed to mop up.

Alternatively, if the opposition have a close marking (possibly dopey corner back), ask the corner forward to go out and play in front of the sweeper or kind of half mark the sweeper. The close marking corner back will follow the forward out so you end up with their two players covered by your one forward.

We had a coach last year who wanted to play with seven forwards if the opposition dropped a man back. Brave move but you need good mobile backs who can deal with the extra space.

Would you rotate forwards. Position them close to goal and spread out to the wings on delivery ?

Tipp got a lot of joy last year out of actually raining high ball down on the sweeper against Waterford. The full forward line attacked it from behind the sweeper, the full back was unable to contest against his own man, so the forward was either able to catch it clean or break it to where he wanted it.
