Hi, Just noticed Roscommon county council "trimming" the verge on the road to my home today - the have the tractor out cutting back the hedge rows. I assume this is not permitted at this time of year but it being the council there is little to object to?
There is an event happening nearby at the local GAA club which I assume is the reason this is now happening to widen the roads for cars wanting to park on the verges. Place is teaming with wildlife at the moment.

They'll tell you Road safety trumps everything else unfortunately.

I guessed as much, they made a mess of the lane passing my house last October ish butchering the hedgerows really badly and it hasn't recovered fully yet but at least the guy doing it today on the next road isn't going too deep into the hedge, just a shame re the timing for birds nesting.

There is an exemption in the Wildlife Act for road safety issues- much of which could be scheduled in winter but isn't.

Wex co co the same thing when i was there recently, no way was there a safety issue where I saw it happening on the N25

Very very annoying that this provision exists, co co's don't give a damn

I'm by no means defending it but cutting in winter will not clear verges on country roads for a heavy traffic event in June.

Ah yes- I was only referring to the hedge cutting aspect raised by the OP. The verges need to be cut at junctions when the growth is up.

It's the same all over, unfortunately - I'm sure there must be better, less destructive ways to trim the hedges, although they may not be as quick. In some places they really leave the trees and the shrubs completely mangled.

I agree. They're not so much trimmed or cut, as flailed within an inch of their life.
