Apologies if there is a thread already on this - if there is please direct me to it.

I have had a binge eating disorder since my teenage years. Its gotten progressively worse over the years to the point I am at now which is binge eating every day. I also suffer from anxiety and depression for which I attend my doctor and mental health services regularly. I often bring up the BED but even though they say I have it there has been no real help offered. I know I have to make the changes, i fully understand that, but it has become this monster that I can't overcome. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this and how they got help or helped themselves. I am really at my wits end with it I just cannot stop.

Have you contacted Bodywhys? I'm surprised your GP and mental health services haven't mentioned them.

With the depression and anxiety, Has anyone ever spoken to you about Borderline Personality Disorder? A symptom of that is binge-eating and can often go unrecognised.

There are many causes of binge eating. The OP might be well advised to change her GP and find one who will refer her to a good counsellor or psychiatrist who will help her get to the root cause of her binge eating. Perhaps she grew up in a family where girls and women were not allowed to be angry and eating is the only way she can deal with her emotions. If her GP is not referring her further she needs to find help elsewhere.

Absolutely, you need a GP that works with you.

I just wanted to point out that sometimes GP's don't join the dots. There's a lot of shame linked with binge eating and people view it in isolation or as a result of depression, I was just trying to open up some ideas as my GP is one you have to go to with the diagnosis and then he'll move forward.

Anyway I hope the OP gets help, we are all so reluctant to change GP's but sometimes it can be essential.

Dean Clinic an outpatient part of St Patricks' Mental Health Services do a free assessment (if i'm correct) once referred by GP and you're not under another service. It is a private service so appointments afterwards are charged, I don't know if that's suitable for you.

All referrals deemed appropriate will be offered a mental health assessment at the Dean Clinics, this assessment is provided free of charge to service users referred by their GP provided the service user is not under the care of another service.

I think as you mention Anxiety, depression and Binge Eating Dean Clinic could really help with an initial assessment as they specialise in

    Adult Dean Clinics
    Depression
    Bipolar Mood Disorder
    Anxiety
    OCD
    Eating Disorders
    Stress-related Disorders
    Addiction
Dual Diagnosis (Mental Health plus Addiction)
    Psychosis

If you feel you are getting nowhere with your GP a trick I learned was to print off referral forms and bring them to him.

    Hope this info helps.
