Buying things on tick

The manager of my local On The Run garage would know me very well - not personally, but he'd know me to see, having being a customer of his shop for many years, often going in two or three times a day.

I'm broke at the moment, like genuinely no money, but do you reckon he'd let me do a bit of a shop and give me something of a tab, rather than pay for it there and then? I'm going to ask regardless, because I've run out of options, but I'll be less embarrassed if this isn't a completely unreasonable request and I don't know whether it is or not.

Chain or franchise, no chance. Small corner shop, possibly

It depends on how well he knows you I guess. It's a very common thing in pubs to run tabs and for said person to come back the next day. I've also seen it being done in small family run businesses and shops.

It all boils down to how trustworthy he thinks you are but I wouldn't consider it unreasonable as long as you explained your situation and don't make a habit of it.

Edit: As Collie said, it may not be up to him if it's a business chain.

On "Tick" is that not just in reference to drugs, never heard anyone use it for non drug stuff before :D

But..... you never know unless you ask the guy tbh.

Well mainly I just need smokes :o

I can go without food providing there's lovely nicotine coursing through me.

Can you not get a loan off friends/family until pay day?

Add up all the money you have spent on smokes and you could be pulling into your local On The Run in your Ferrari to buy premium petrol.
Just don't ask me where my Ferrari is.

Ah that old joke is brilliant, a few times I've used it when people have said I could have x,y & z if I gave up. Asked them where theres was and they never brought it up again.

Don't ask for credit as refusal often offends.

I won't be offended. I'll just bring my business to the local Spar instead from now on. Well, that'll be the implication, but he probably knows I'm too lazy to walk that additional four minutes.

Those avenues have been exhausted I'm afraid. I'm now quite parasitic and desperately needing a tab at Esso.

And he will know spar won't give you credit. Maybe call the manager/owner to one side. Explain to him that your broke until friday etc and that you will pay.

If you're shopping regularly in a garage that's probably why you're broke in fairness.

Whatever about getting food on tick which imo will be unlikely, it's highly doubtful you'll get smokes or alcohol without ponying up the cash.

Don't be surprised if they say no, my place got screwed when a guy asked to pay tomorrow for ciggs and an 8 pack as he left his wallet and never came back to pay for it - he was mates with the owner who left him off to pay the following day and never came back

Remember the Sopranos episode where the two bucks try to offer protection to the franchise coffee shop, they come out and say there's just no chance for the little guy any more :D

Same goes for tick, it's always the decent local business that gets stung.

I applied for a top-up loan at the Credit Union, but I still need the essentials - pack of Marlboro Red - until that comes through. Maybe I'll just leave my PayPal details here and if anybody wants to donate to a truly worthy cause they can.

You've got bigger problems than smokes, then.

Well in fairness if you have no money until 1st of July I really don't see how your going to be approved a top up loan. Are you employed?

No, no it's not. It was a genuine enquiry to see if shops do or would offer tabs to loyal and long-term customers.

I am yes, and the repayements for the initial loan had been very steady so I'm hoping that stands me in good stead.

I could, but I've already asked for my job back so it'll look bad if I then ask for an advance I think. Believe me, I've considered it, but I can't do that so Derek in Esso is my last chance.

You'll find that some employers will be grand regardless of the circumstances. I would chance my arm at the advance before going to poor Derek.

Asking for credit while buying smokes probably won't work.

As strange as this sounds, and given the circumstances, giving them up now is definitely not an option.

Here is your chance to give up the fags.

Is it possible to buy anything "on tick" at all nowadays? I would have thought it very unlikely given that as a child in the 1980s shops had signs up telling patrons that they no longer accepted credit for product purchase.

Do they still do the 50 cent bag of porridge in Lidl?
