    Hi,
Can anyone recommend a mandolin for a beginner? I have a lot of experience on guitar and would like to get something decent. I have no idea of what they cost or how much to spend.

    Thanks

I picked up one of these a while back as my first mandolin. Does what I need. Not overly expensive, but could be made a bit better.

Buy mine off Adverts!! Only joking.

You wouldn't really need one with a pickup. Tanglewood make some nice ones. I'd get a regular one in the terdrop shape rather than a bluegrass style.

I got a Crafter years ago. It had a bowl type back on it. Wasn't the best in the world, but is still knocking around, and decent enough.

It has a slightly wider fretboard than the one I have now.

Unless you plan on playing live on stage, then a pickup really is required.

A microphone was good enough for Rory Gallagher ;)

you will notice that the neck is a LOT thinner than guitar.

even with the double strings, it'll take a bit of getting used to.

completely different tuning of course (GDAE) but to keep your head on straight you can still use your old guitar chord book and reverse it for thew bottom 4 strings, and flip it lefty.

    sounds daft but it works!

    as to a starter mando?

get a cheapie off ebay and have a go at it!
