BMW e60, boot release problem

I have done some searching but don't see anything on my exact problem.
    09 520D

Last week I got out of the car and pressed the boot release button on the key fob but nothing happened. Tried the handle and also pressed the release button inside the car - all to no avail.
Finally took the blade key out of the fob and manually opened the boot.

When I got home I decided to investigate but everything seemed to be operating normally.

A week later, I opened the boot using the button on the key fob but then found that I couldn't get it to stay closed. The solution was to press the button inside the car. There was an audible click from the lock and I could close the boot.

Now I have to open it every time with the blade key and lock it by pressing the button in the car to reset it.

I am aware of the valet setting and have tried locking and unlocking the glove compartment and setting the locking postion on the boot to both vertical and horizontal. Nothing seems to help.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Just to follow up -
turned out that this was casued by a work, and then broken, earth lead.
I brought it to a local mechanic (not BMW) and the fix was relatively inexpensive.
