I'm wondering what material a bog standard 1960's skirting board would be made from generally?
    Hardwood or Softwood?
Asking because I need to drill pilot holes for safety gate screws
    thanks

the common advice is to drill a larger pilot hole in hardwood in order to prevent splitting

Rub a little candle wax on the screw threads before driving them in to help them go in more easily.
